C17 The White Pig’s Little Brother Is Apparently a Chick
Somehow, my parents finally reached an agreement. And two days later, they vanished from the estate.
Before he left, Father apparently told Utsunomiya-san, “If Hōchō bullies you, report it to me immediately.”
Which, understandably, left Utsunomiya-san more outraged than touched.
Mother, on the other hand, seemed to leave in a better mood—turns out she negotiated herself a massive child support package for Regulus-kun, which will continue until he comes of age.
With that, it seems the only “liability” left in the house is me.
As for me? I pushed my brain way too hard during that family meeting, overheated, and ended up spending a full day in bed with a fever.
The day after that, I was back to my usual morning routine: a stroll around the grounds.
I gave my thanks to the Princess for the miraculous peach and told her that we had a new family member. She graciously gave me permission to bring Regulus-kun along for our morning walks.
Normally, gods don’t just go showing themselves to people—but when I explained my responsibility for Regulus-kun’s education, she smiled and said, “Sounds fun. Bring him.”
Which means I now had to think of an assignment suitable for him to do during our walks.
I spread out a large piece of paper on the desk and, using a ruler, drew lines to make hand-sized squares. I snipped along the lines to create several equal sheets.
The technology in this world is strange—there are magic-powered stoves, ovens, refrigerators, even showers and bathtubs…
But no origami? No patterned washi paper!?
My inner Japanese self was silently screaming: Isn’t origami the foundation of all early childhood learning toys!?
Luckily, paper here isn’t particularly expensive—at least not for the son of a noble.
If there’s no origami paper, I’ll just make my own!
I folded one of the squares diagonally into a triangle, and then again and again—until I had a perfect paper crane, familiar to any Japanese child.
Satisfied, I packed the example crane into my waist pouch, along with some spare paper and scissors. Then I changed into my blouse and pants, rang the bell by the bed, and called for Rottenmeier-san.
Nothing about my daily life had changed—except now, Regulus-kun and Utsunomiya-san were part of it. That’s all.
Hand in hand, I toddled along with Regulus-kun, singing as we made our way to the rear garden.
While we’re out for our walk, Utsunomiya-san will be receiving training from Rottenmeier-san on how to conduct herself as a proper servant of the Kikunoi household.
After that, she’d take care of the laundry and cleaning for Regulus-kun.
Regulus-kun, meanwhile, would learn about the household’s daily duties.
In the afternoon, I’d teach him what I’d learned from Romanov-sensei.
He’d nap when he got worn out, and during that time, I’d focus on my hobbies.
At night, I’d resume my lessons with Sensei.
It’s a pretty packed schedule, but honestly, only Regulus-kun has it tough.
For me, this is just another regular day.
As usual, a small parade of animals followed me as I sang my way into the garden, where a single, grand peony was in full bloom.
It swayed gently in the breeze, and as petals shimmered in the sunlight, a dazzling woman emerged from within.
“Good morning, Princess.”
“G’morning!”
I bowed deeply, and Regulus-kun, clutching the hem of my blouse, gave a cute little nod.
“Hmm… Raise your heads.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
As we looked up, Regulus-kun’s blond hair swayed softly—he really did look like a little chick.
Apparently, the Princess thought the same.
“So this little chick is your younger brother?”
“Yes. Regulus-kun, can you introduce yourself?”
“I’m WEGURUSU fwom BAAAN-shutain…”
“Ah, so that’s Kikunoi Regulus Bernstein…?”
So Father’s family name is Bernstein. Huh.
Come to think of it, I don’t even know my parents’ first names…
Note to self: ask Rottenmeier-san about that later.
Anyway—
I handed Regulus-kun the picnic cloth I had packed and had him sit down.
My singing sessions tend to be long, and standing the whole time would be tiring for a three-year-old.
“Now then… what shall I sing today?”
“Hmm…”
The Princess enjoys songs about love and romance, sure—but she also appreciates hymns and songs that celebrate nature.
She seems especially fond of songs that tell a story.
While I waited for her to decide, she lifted a translucent fan with a flutter.
“Little one, what do you have in that pouch?”
“My pouch?”
I did a mental inventory—scissors, a handkerchief, paper for origami, and some writing paper. Nothing weird.
But the Princess’s eyes lit up as she pointed directly at my waist pouch.
“Yes, that! That paper bird-like thing!”
“Oh, you mean the paper crane?”
“You call it an ‘origami crane’? Show me at once!”
She was way too excited.
So I took the folded crane out of the pouch and placed it gently in her porcelain-white hand.
She examined it with intense curiosity, her eyes gleaming even more.
“This is made from a single piece of paper?”
“Yes. Would you… like to see how it’s made?”
“Absolutely. Show me at once!”
I sat down beside Regulus-kun on the picnic cloth, pulled out a square of paper, and began folding.
As I hummed to myself, mountain fold here, valley fold there, Regulus-kun leaned in, watching curiously.
The more the paper took shape, the more his eyes sparkled.
“There! All done!”
The crane rolled onto my open palm, and both the Princess and Regulus-kun stared at it intently.
They gently spun the paper wings with their fingers, admiring it together. It was… really adorable.
Although maybe calling a goddess “adorable” is a bit disrespectful.
As I smiled fondly at the scene, the Princess cleared her throat.
“I shall accept this as a gift.”
“Eh!? But… it’s just paper!”
“What’s this? Are you saying you would deny me?”
“N-no! I just… wish I had prettier paper for it, that’s all…”
“Prettier paper? Like what?”
“Maybe something with floral designs? Or the kind of patterns on your kimono?”
“Very well. Give me two or three days.”
And with that, the Princess vanished like a wisp of smoke.
Uh… what about today’s song?
Oh well. Since I had no audience, I sang an upbeat anime theme song for Regulus-kun on the way home instead.
