Also, I still believe the Knights would be the most suitable for this. Especially..." "Very well. I’ve also thought of a few alternatives in case the kidnappers transport them via carriage or other means..." "In that case, we should start here first..." "That may not align with my sister's wishes. So..." "Indeed. Then, let's proceed with that." "However, there are concerns. What if my sister or I..." "Leave it to me." Stayle and Chancellor Gilbert were deep in a strategic meeting, and we were completely excluded from it. In fact, I didn't even feel like I could join. Tiara and I sat on the bed where Val had been sleeping, watching the two of them from the side, while Arthur stood by me, keeping watch. After Stayle, Tiara, Arthur, ...

Chapter 14: The Former Orlesian Spy

Only Leticia, the caster, could detect the anomaly in the barrier.

She frowned slightly, and Gilbert tilted his head as he asked, "Is something wrong?"

"Ah, it seems a forgetful bird collided with the wall."

"A bird? ...Wait. That’s impossible. This is the worst timing!"

Gilbert crossed his arms in front of his face and let out a long sigh.

The recent tremor had been caused by a direct impact. Though it’s called a barrier, it isn’t a physical wall wrapped around the outside; it passes through the least noticeable part of the interior. Based on this, there was only one person Leticia knew who could have collided with it.

Apologizing, she gently caressed Gilbert’s cheek before placing her hand to her ear to establish a telepathic link.

Telepathy is a wireless communication spell, available only to those who can use magic. If two people have previously exchanged magical energy, they can communicate directly into each other’s minds.

"It's Leticia. I’ve told you before, right? There’s a barrier around the bedroom. Please learn to remember, Focon."

"Ow, ow, ow...! Princess, can we stop making the bedroom so fortified? If you lowered it just one more level, I could pass through it normally. It’s more secure than the classified documents vault!"

"What are you talking about? I put it up for your sake."

"Why me?! I’m on your side!"

Focon protested loudly.

Focon had originally served the Orlesian family and, after Leticia’s marriage to Gilbert, had been sent by her father, Adolf, as a spy.

His magic was quite unique, excelling in both infiltration into walls, columns, and trees, as well as cloaking his presence. He could become the eyes and ears in any location, making it easy for him to extract classified information as if it were child’s play.

Considering Focon’s remarkable skills, it was no surprise that he was highly valued by the Orlesian family. But why had he been assigned to Leticia? Was it to spy on the Imperial family? Leticia had wondered about this, but when she asked her father, Adolf’s answer was unexpectedly clear.

"I thought he would be of help to Prince Gilbert!"

Upon hearing this, Leticia sighed, "Please don’t overwork my husband."

Apparently, when the Orlesian family had been on the verge of falling, Adolf had been impressed by Gilbert’s behind-the-scenes actions and clever tactics, and had quickly come to value both Gilbert and his intellect.

Had the information reached Gilbert earlier, the entire downfall could have been avoided. In that case, Adolf thought it was better to place the Orlesian family’s top spy close to Gilbert to help him acquire information, rather than waiting for hard-to-get intelligence.

In other words, Focon wasn’t assigned to help Leticia, but rather to assist Gilbert. Leticia couldn’t help but sigh at this revelation, but since Focon had said, "This will be really helpful!" it had been deemed acceptable.

"Leticia? It’s Focon, right? I don’t think he’s the kind of person to disturb our time like this, so this must be about the matter we discussed. Why isn’t he showing up? Is something wrong?"

"No, he’s fine. As usual. From the tone of his voice, it’s not an urgent matter, but it’s definitely somewhat urgent. I’ll release the barrier immediately, but first..."

She pulled Gilbert by the arm and sat him on the bed, adjusting his appearance. She lightly combed through his hair with her hands, and to stir him up, she buttoned his shirt all the way up, despite the usual disheveled look.

Gilbert’s eyes were still a bit sleepy, and his expression was still in a soft, affectionate mood — now, what should she do? Leticia narrowed her eyes, and in response, Gilbert slapped his own cheek.

"I’m fine. I’m awake now. Even if it’s Focon, I shouldn’t mix work and personal matters. ...Sorry. I wasn’t thinking properly."

"Why are you apologizing? This is my selfishness."

"Your selfishness?"

"Yes, exactly. Now, let’s quickly release the barrier. Sorry to have kept you waiting, Focon."

As soon as Leticia’s magic was undone, Focon tumbled out from the nearby wall.

He was a handsome young man with ash-gray hair in a two-block style, his golden eyes sharp like a bird of prey, yet with a certain charm. He wore tight-fitting black clothes, with a harness over them. Though he was kneeling, his eyes clearly showed displeasure.

"Uh, Princess? What is this? Why is there a barrier for me?"

"Why else would there be one? Only I’m allowed to see Gilbert-sama’s adorable face. If you had been a humble subordinate who asked for permission all the time, I wouldn’t have gone this far. But you’re the type to rush in without thinking, aren’t you?"

Her smile was as graceful as Bell Poupée's, but there was no playfulness in her eyes. Focon let out a short, startled scream.

"...I-I’m sorry for barging in suddenly. I’ll accept the barrier... yes. If I had accidentally barged in, I might have died."

"Oh, it would help if you learned your lesson. I thought I was a more indifferent person, but it seems I’m more human than I thought. My possessiveness over Gilbert-sama is no less than anyone else’s."

"I’ll engrave it in my brain! I’ll never make that foolish mistake again!"

Clearly, the fear of stumbling into the couple’s private moments outweighed the pain from hitting the barrier. Wise decision. To Leticia, Gilbert’s sleeping face and those intimate moments were far more valuable secrets than any imperial documents.

She placed her hand on Focon’s shoulder, leaned in close to his ear, and whispered softly, "You’re a good boy. I’m glad you’re learning."

In an instant, Focon rushed backward so quickly that it almost seemed like he had hit the wall, shaking his head and making an X with his hands. His ears turned bright red.

Though not as extreme as Gilbert, Focon was also a straightforward and cute young man. That’s exactly why teasing him was so much fun—but Leticia knew she had to be careful, or her husband might start sulking. Watching him blush and grin as he muttered, "Leticia, possessiveness over me..." Leticia smiled fondly.

"Please, Princess, you’re terrifying even without the Dragon Emperor level of power!"

"Haha! It’s just a little playful teasing. Don’t take it too seriously."

"I know! Of course!"

He clapped his hands to brush off the dust from his clothes and stood up.

"It’s a surprise to hear you have feelings like that, Princess. But I’d say you should keep it in check. If it’s too much, it’ll make people uncomfortable. Right, Gilbert-sama?"

"Huh? Was that too much? Isn’t it actually too little? I’d prefer to bind him up more, make sure no one else can even look at him."

YANDERE VIBES!!!!?? The best bahahahha

"Huh?"

"Huh?"

Gilbert looked at Focon with disbelief, while Focon stared back at him, stunned. The two of them had just encountered the unknown
